Detailed description
The most bloody and prolonged military operation in 1945 were fighting in East Prussia. 103 days, Soviet troops fought with the German units that took on the territory a wide network of fortifications and support of the local population.
Preparations for the offensive on January 13 was carried out under the fire of the enemy artillery. Promotion of the Red Army could not go unnoticed, and the enemy forces were ready to defend in this area. Large fog and low clouds create obstacles to the use of aircraft and armored divisions promotion. Despite the slow progress, to 18 the number of defense was breached. A week later, Soviet troops reached the Baltic Sea, Kёninsberg blocked and cut off the path of retreat fascists. January 29 the German group was broken up and locked in three areas: Kёninsberge, Samland and Heylsberge.
In February, the Germans carried out a series of counter-attacks, including a corridor opened in Kёninsberg and thwarted attack on the Samland. Especially difficult were the battles with Heylsbergskoy group, a quarter of whom were militia from the local population. It was abolished on 29 March. April 6-9, were the battle for the capture Kёninsberga, which in addition to air armies and the Soviet Union was in the Navy aviation regiment of French pilots. Remains Samland grouping together with fortified port Pillau - the last stronghold of the German East Prussia - were eliminated on April 25.
After suffering huge losses in personnel and equipment the Soviet Union came to the Baltic Sea and freed northern Poland. Destroyed more than 25 divisions Nazis, Soviet troops occupied East Prussia, part of which later became part of the Soviet Union, together with Kёninsbergom (now Kaliningrad).
