Detailed description

Historically, the existence of the city of Sevastopol is closely connected with the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

After the Russian-Turkish wars in the 18th century the Crimean Khanate came under the rule of the Russian Empire. In Crimea settled Russian troops under the command of Alexander Suvorov. He thoroughly studied the shoreline coast and erected the first fortification, which served as the basis for the port grounds. Although the construction site of the fort coincided with those located on the coast of the ruins of the ancient city of Hersonissos, you can not say that Sevastopol was his historic successor.

In 1782, the year Russian frigate "Brave" and "Cautious" Ahtiarskuyu arrived in the harbor for the winter. They have given rise to the formation of the Black Sea Fleet. For maintenance and construction of the fleet we needed people, and very soon the city grew on the coast. In 1784, the year he was named Sevastopol.

In addition to port and a large military settlement here Admiralty, which for a long time was the main enterprise of the city it was built. In 1792, the year the city's population numbered more than 15 thousand inhabitants, and the port can accommodate up to 60 vehicles. She grew up trade with other countries.

In 1797, the year King Paul I decided to rename the city in Akhtiar. But this title lasted a long time, and after the death of the king of Sevastopol returned to his name.

The history of Sevastopol - a history of frequent military operations against the invaders. First, the city was fortified only by sea, but the enemy was forced to build a good strengthening and on the approaches by land. Sailors of the Russian fleet, as well as residents of Sevastopol have entered more than one heroic story in the history of Russia.

Following the 18 March 2014 referendum, the city of Sevastopol again is a part of Russia.
