Detailed description

In winter 1945 the USSR conducted a brilliantly Vistula-Oder operation - one of the major offensives of the final stage of the fight against the Nazis. A little less than 3 weeks (12 January - 3 February), the Soviet Union's military units were able to overcome the two great water obstacles and 7 defensive lines, advancing day by more than 20 kilometers.

Before the operation the Soviet Union there was a very distinct advantage over the enemy army by number, guns and military equipment. Hitler almost no reserve in people who are able to replenish the depleted ranks of the army. Military industry suffered a tremendous loss of air strikes by Allied air forces were on the verge of extinction.

The attack on Nazi positions began on January 12, along with three bridgeheads - Mangushevskogo, Puławy and Sandomierz. A day to attack joined forces on the territory of East Prussia. January 17 released the capital of Poland - Warsaw. enemy defenses were swept away by a hundred kilometers into defensive fortifications. Two days later, the first Soviet troops entered the German soil.

20-25 January in Poznan was surrounded by a large part of the German troops (60 thousand garrison). In total, during the operation, Germany has lost 35 divisions in 25 divisions missed 50-70% of staff. About 150 thousand people were taken prisoner. The end of the operation is considered to be the period when the Soviet military units to the Oder and the transition to their control of the left bank of the bridgehead.
