Detailed description
Within thirty days of spring 1945 in western Hungary and eastern Austria, Soviet troops with the assistance of the Bulgarian units carried out the operation, dubbed Vienna.
The German command counted on the benefits of the Austrian terrain (mountains and forests), to pass the time and make a truce with Britain and the United States. The capital of Austria - Vienna - has been further strengthened antitank ditches and fences. Streets were barricaded in the houses constructed pillboxes, bridges mined.
Sudden powerful artillery fire on the first day of the operation resulted in the enemy into confusion. But the fascist command was able to quickly regain control of the situation. The Germans applied counterattacks and injected into battle reserves, but to prevent the offensive of the Red Army could not. Esztergom-tovaroshskaya group dissolved on 25 March 28 - released in Gyor and Komarom, and 30 - Komarno. The Soviet Union supported the Allied bombing aviation airfields, bridges and industrial facilities in the south of Austria, southern Slovakia and western Hungary.
The threat environment of the units has forced the German command to begin a retreat. In early April, the offensive continued to grow rapidly. April 2 reached the advancing Austro-Hungarian border, and 4 - went to Vienna. The next day began street fighting while surrounding the city from the north and south. After five days the garrison was caught on three sides and immediately began to retreat to the west. The Austrian capital was released April 13.
Freeing hundreds of human settlements in Hungary and eastern Austria, the Soviet army in addition, it eliminated large enemy group.
