Detailed description
In every Russian name is not associated Novgorod except Great. And it's really great city with a rich history.
There are several variants of the history of Novgorod. But only one of them suggests the appearance of not only the city but also its name.
In ancient times, when the Slavic tribes inhabited the area around the lake Ilmen, on the banks of the Volkhov was founded a fortified town called Slovenian. Rule settlement Chamber and elected on him elders. Slovensk developed and traded briskly with the adjacent territories, until it was conquered by the Vikings. It was then that the town was named Novgorod. From that moment, he is mentioned in ancient historical chronicles. It is 859 years old, it is considered to be the founding year of Novgorod.
After calling Rurik to rule the city began to actively grow and mature. Location it on the big trade route brought prosperity to the people of Novgorod, and he himself deserved fame. In addition to Kiev, it became the largest center, originally having an independent principality, and then joining the Kievan Rus.
Historical heritage of Novgorod enormous. Of the surviving monuments are best known Novgorod Kremlin and St. Sophia Cathedral. The Kremlin was originally built in 1044 of wood, and in the 14th century was rebuilt in stone already. Cathedral built in 1045 the son of Yaroslav the Wise in the likeness of St. Sophia.
In 2009, the year of Novgorod celebrated 1150 years of foundation of the city. commemorative coin was issued to this date.
