Velikie Luki is an ancient Russian city on the Pskov land. The city was founded in 1166, and in 1211 the fortress walls were erected. The fortress was a reliable outpost of the defense of the Novgorod lands from Lithuania. Great Luke always, his whole history was the shield of the Russian land. Here the road to Pskov and Smolensk, Tver and Moscow opened.
During the initial period of the Livonian War, the city of Ivan the Terrible was at stake, there was a gathering point for Russian troops on their way to Polotsk. In the XVI - XVII century in the city there was a streltsy settlement, there were military people. In the Time of Troubles, the city was devastated and burnt to the ground, later rebuilt. Wooden fortress walls with towers, houses, churches were erected.
During the Patriotic War of 1812, Great Luke covered the approaches to the capital of the Russian Empire. The city was a large rear base of Russian troops. The Velikie Luka militia fought heroically for the liberation of Polotsk from the Napoleonic troops.
Over time, Velikie Luki found themselves on the brisk trade route between Novgorod and the Hanseatic League, the city became a transit center for transit trade. By order of Peter the Great, Great Luke was declared a port city, a pier was built, which had a favorable effect on the volume of trade. At the same time, the Belarusian State Route passed through the city. In the XIX century Velikie Luki became the center of tanning. In 1901, a railway passed through the city.
During the Great Patriotic War for thirty-three days the heroic defense of Great Onions from the German invaders was going on. But the forces were not equal, and the city had to be abandoned. He was released from occupation in January 1943. Street battles for the liberation of the Great Onions from the Nazis were so fierce that the city was called "Little Stalingrad."
