Detailed description
Two hundred kilometers to the north of the Russian capital is the city of Tver, in the war against the fascist invaders, who bore the name of Kalinin. In 2014, Tver celebrated 806 years - first mentioned in chronicles in 1208.
The territory of the city has repeatedly been invaded by foreigners. First time Tver was destroyed in the early XVII century, armies of Poland and Lithuania. The German occupation in 1941 also had a devastating impact.
After Kalinin took the railway, waterway Volga River and the highway in the direction of Moscow. These circumstances contributed to the decision of the German command to capture the city and use it as a strategic point in the capture of the administrative and cultural capital of Russia - Moscow and Leningrad.
The Germans quickly moved to the city, virtually unopposed. The enemy forces several times greater than the number of defenders Kalinin. October 13, 1941 began the application of air strikes and artillery shelling of urban areas. By noon the next day the battle has shifted to the streets. Superior power forwards and complete absence of artillery and air support allowed the enemy to capture the city. The occupation lasted little more than two months.
Repeated attempts to release Kalinin in October and November did not bring the desired result. But Soviet troops actively hindered further progress in the direction of the German Army in Moscow, until the liberation of the city. The loss of Soviet troops in the liberation operation was 2 times more than the Nazi troops.
In November 2010, the decree of the President of Russia Tver won the right to wear the title of "City of Military Glory."
