Detailed description
The population of the town of Stary Oskol, which is located in the Kursk region, learned about the attack of Hitler's army to noon June 22, 1941. By three o'clock the mobilization of the population was in full swing. Martial law was introduced in the city on 23 June. They began to open military hospitals, have begun to form assault battalions and detachments of the People's Militia.
Soviet soldiers heroically defended the south-east of the country, but could not hold back the offensive of the German troops. In October 1941, he was put Belgorod in November - Kursk. With heavy losses of the USSR army could, for some time now to stop the enemy from the Northern Donets. But in July 1942 the Wehrmacht soldiers entered in Stary Oskol. Week thundered fierce battles for the city, diverting German forces from Voronezh and forcing the river Don.
Stary Oskol area was in German occupation until February 1943. During this period, thousands of people were deported to Germany as slaves, hundreds - were subjected to torture and executions. Most of the industrial enterprises destroyed enemy aircraft.
Soviet troops, after a grand victory at Stalingrad, in the second half of January 1943 began the liberation Starooskolya. 5 February, after several weeks of fighting, German troops were driven out of the city. On the territory of the region laid down their lives around 7000 soldiers.
Dmitry Medvedev, having published May 7, 2011 Presidential Decree, for heroism and courage shown by the defenders of the city, the city of Stary Oskol awarded the title of "City of Military Glory."
