Detailed description

Nearly seven months lasted Battle of Stalingrad - the largest battle ever happened on land. The defenders of the city were able to stop the attack of the enemy forces, includes several armies of Nazi Germany and its allies - Rumanians and Italians, and go to the offensive for the liberation of Soviet territory.

The attack on the city on the Volga, which bore the name of Stalin, the seventeenth in July 1942. Five days the battle continued on the approaches to the main front. By 22 July, when the Germans broke through to the city's main line of defense, they had an undeniable superiority in weapons. Defending the city were newly formed units, whose fighters had very little experience of military action. There was a shortage of fortifications, artillery and fighter aircraft. Despite this, the Red Army soldiers fought hard for every inch of land of Stalingrad.

In late August, the Nazis began to inflict massive airstrikes on Stalingrad, turning the city into ruins. On 13 September, the Nazis stormed. Fighting moved to the streets and in the houses of the city.

In November, Soviet troops were able to take in the "Ring" by German forces at Stalingrad. The attempt of the Germans in December to break surrounded by compatriots failed. Soviet "Ring" operation ended in complete surrender of the invaders at the beginning of February 1943. More than 90 thousand Nazis were captured.

The Soviet Union's victory in the Battle of Stalingrad led to large losses of Nazi Germany and its allies, the Soviet people allowed to go to the offensive and the expulsion of the enemy from the occupied territories. The morale of the invaders was broken, and Europe has been able to believe in the possibility of liberation from the fascist yoke.
