There are two main reasons why the capture of Stalingrad was so important to Hitler:

  • it was a large industrial city on the Volga, which acted as a vital transport route between the Caspian Sea and northern Russia;
  • take the oil regions of the Caucasus.

In this battle, both sides killed more than 2 million people, the city was completely destroyed, but it did not surrender to the enemy and won. After the Battle of Stalingrad, German troops were not able to recover their former strength, and reached no further strategic victories in the East.

In the struggle for the independence and freedom of their country, Stalingrad became a symbol of courage, fortitude and heroism of the Soviet people, so the city was awarded the title Hero City in 1945, on 8 May.

May 1, 1945 in the order of the Supreme Commander of the city of Stalingrad named among the first cities-heroes.
