In July 1941, the German High Command ordered the Army Group "Center", to surround the Soviet troops who defended the line of the Western Dvina and Dnepr, to capture Smolensk, Vitebsk and Orsha, thus creating favorable conditions for the smooth advance on Moscow. Battle of Smolensk has an important place in the military operations of the summer of 1941. This battle has begun in a very unfavorable conditions for Soviet troops July 10, 1941 and lasted 62 days.
One of the major contributions of this battle was that the Soviet Union has established itself as a worthy opponent. Our troops fought with the knowledge that the enemy must be destroyed at all costs. They detained the Nazi offensive on Moscow for 2 months, thus winning time to prepare and strengthen the defense lines around the capital. Army Group "Centre" instead of the attack on Moscow had to go on the defensive. Implementation of the plan "Barbarossa" was disrupted.
Higher degree of difference "Hero City" Order of Lenin and medal "Gold Star" is assigned to the city of Smolensk in 1985 for the heroism and courage of its defenders, manifested in the struggle for freedom and independence of their country in World War II.
