Detailed description

"Gateway to the Caucasus" is called the Nazi command Rostov-on-Don. Taking the city opened the way to the natural resources of the Caucasus. Rostov land provided twice in the Nazi occupation.

Fifty-sixth army fought for the city and surrounding area in autumn 1941 about a month. It is composed of and volunteer units of Rostov - Rifle Regiment of the People's Militia. Having failed to break through to Rostov-on-Don on the shortest path, the Germans on November 17 bypassed the town from the north. Five days defenders heroically reflect enemy attacks. Having lost most of the equipment and personnel, our troops were forced to retreat.

Eight days later, called "bloody week", Soviet troops of the Southern Front regained Rostov. During this time, the Nazis managed to destroy more than a hundred people.

The following 7 months, the city was in the frontal zone. Enterprises produced for front: weapons, ammunition and equipment. The local population is actively involved in helping the wounded, placed in hospitals.

The second wave of occupation came in the summer of 1942. Within 4 days of July were fierce battles on the outskirts of the city and streets. Of the 120 thousand defenders Rostov, survive this offensive the Germans were able to only 18 thousand people.

For 7 months until the next release of the occupants of the city shot and tortured about 40 thousand people - prisoners of war and civilians, about 53 million have become slaves in Germany. The Germans razed to the ground 85% of buildings, 98% of factories, utilities and transportation city. Rostov-on-Don has become free again February 14, 1943.

Dmitry Medvedev May 5, 2008 the city awarded the honorary title of "City of Military Glory."
