Detailed description

Among the Soviet republics, Latvia was first occupied by the Hitlerites. Already on July 1, the fascists took Riga, the capital of Latvia. Riga was liberated by Soviet troops only in 3 years - October 15, 1944.

By the autumn of 1944, the German army group North from the south was captured by the forces of the Byelorussian fronts, from the east by the forces of the Baltic fronts, from the northwest pressed to the Baltic Sea. Despite the serious danger of complete encirclement, Hitler wanted at any cost to keep the Baltic coast. He did not want to lose ports, giving control over the Baltic and an established production of synthesized gasoline. The entire territory of the Baltic region was turned into a continuous fortified area, total mobilization began, and on the main lines the SS detachments were delivered. The main forces of the fascists were concentrated around Riga.

Riga was decided to take the forces of the three Baltic fronts. The beginning of the offensive was scheduled for September 14, 1944. On the same day, the enemy's defense was broken, but the fighting was very heavy. Only after the breakthrough of our troops in the Memel direction on October 6, 1944, the German command ordered the beginning of the withdrawal of troops from the area of Riga. Our troops began a swift pursuit of the retreating enemy, the defensive lines broke through on the run, and on October 15, Riga was liberated.

In Riga, behind the Stone Bridge, on the left bank of the Daugava is the Memorial Complex - a monument to the soldiers of the Soviet Army - liberators of Soviet Latvia and Riga from Nazi invaders. The monument was opened in 1985. This is a composition that includes a 79-meter stele with golden stars and sculptural images of Motherland and Warriors-liberators. After the proclamation of Latvia's independence, the monument was subjected to acts of vandalism, cast-iron letters were stolen, the monument was attempted to explode with the help of an improvised explosive device. Proposals on the demolition of the monument are constantly voiced in the local media. These proposals are provoked by the support of some parliamentary parties in Latvia. But the mayor of Riga promised the townspeople that no monument to the soldiers-liberators will not be demolished. More than 60,000 Soviet soldiers died in the battles for the liberation of Riga.
