Detailed description

Until 1940, the Pskov region was a border region. But with the accession of the Baltic fortifications were dismantled and conserved. Restoration of the Pskov-Ostrowski fastening abroad began June 28, 1941. The construction was under machine-gun fire and bombing by German aircraft.

The pilots 39 Fighter Air Division, based in the city, the first to use the tactics of the enemy air rams.

From 3 to 6 July in the battles of Pskov, the enemy lost 140 tanks. Hundreds of bombs dropped on enemies of our pilots, having made 74 sorties. July 7 near the town held the first major tank battle, which involved about 100 Soviet machines and more than 250 German tanks.

A significant role in the Pskov land defense played destroyer battalions and air defense units formed from pskovityan volunteers. They fought against sabotage and assault groups of invaders, put out the fires that occurred after the bombing, guarding important facilities of the city.

Due to the threat posed to the environment there July 9 military units of our army were forced to leave Pskov. City spent under Nazi oppression of the three difficult years.

In occupied territory, it was created several concentration camps, where people were kept in inhumane conditions. The Germans also introduced labor conscription. Women from 15 to 45 years and men 65 years working for the invaders for 14-16 hours.

The release of the Pskov region took place in parts, starting from January 1944. Pskov himself was cleared of the enemy July 23, 1944.
