Detailed description

Pskov originated in ancient times in a place where merge in high cliff Pskov and Great River. When it was founded - it is not known, but the first mention of the city is located in the Laurentian Chronicle from the 903rd year.

The name of the city and the river descended from Old Slavic "Reach" - located between the bends of the river. According to ancient legend, the city was founded Olga, the wife of Prince Igor. When she stood on the river Great, she had a vision of three beams of light coming down from the heavens and the specified location on the opposite bank. Olga ordered to build a temple of the Holy Trinity on the spot, and lay around the city nice and great. Holy Princess Olga considered the patroness of the city today.

Pskov played a role in the history of Russia. Until the 12th century the city was a part of ancient Russia.
