Detailed description
The battles for the liberation of Prague were the last offensive operations of the Soviet Union in the war against world fascism. Army Group "Austria" and "Center" and after the capture of Berlin continued to struggle in the North of Austria and Czechoslovakia. The plans of the new command would move to the western borders to US forces and to surrender to them. Soviet troops also planned to encircle and eliminate the remnants of the Nazi divisions.
In Czechoslovakia in early May launched uprisings against the occupiers, and the sixth of May the Czechoslovak people asked for help from the Soviet Union. From that day, in fact it marked the beginning of the Prague operation. Two days later he was released on Dresden, and May 9 Ukrainian Front troops entered Prague, and clean the city from invaders. Most Germans were surrounded and in the next two days is taken into captivity.
The remaining part of the German troops began to retreat, which then turned into a stampede. The last SS units were destroyed near the village Slivitse in the battle, which lasted almost a day. Czechoslovakia was liberated.
