Detailed description
Just over 100 years has a history of Polar - closed military port 30 kilometers from Murmansk. This city has been and remains a naval base of the Northern Fleet.
Combat alert for Polar defenders was announced five days before the invasion of the enemy. Conducted aerial reconnaissance, naval vessels and submarines stood in patrols, minefields were created. From personnel sailors of the Northern Fleet in July 1941 of the number of land about 10 thousand Marines were organized.
Apart from the military to counter the German forces, the port city has actively assisted the Allied countries - the UK and the US. Blue Polar engaged in repair of ships carrying convoys and military carried out their cover.
Of the fifteen submarines, defending the approaches to the northern shores in 1941, six were awarded the title of the Guard, and the same - Soviet Army. Victory in the war saw only two of those submarines, just as in the battle were killed and twenty-three underwater vessel. Submariners of the Northern Fleet courageously and valiantly defended the maritime borders of the Soviet Union, the possibility of using tactical submarines.
Thanks to the professional activities of air defense artillery battalion, defending the city, Polar hardly suffered from enemy raids.
In total, during the military operations in the Northern Fleet, including the participation of the garrison of the Arctic, shot down about 1,300 Nazi aircraft, sunk more than 600 warships and about 230 disabled.
For courage and heroism demonstrated by sailors, Severomorsk, Polar in 2008 received the right to be called the "City of Military Glory."
