Detailed description
The opening of a second front - the common name of a series of airborne, naval and land operations, deployment of British troops and the US in the French Normandy. The first June 6, 1944 on the territory of Normandy landed paratroopers. After fierce battles against the superior forces of the enemy, the paratroopers managed to take control of several key roads and bridges. After receiving reports of bridgeheads preparation, the commander of Allied forces, General Eisenhower on June 7 ordered the beginning of a sea landing. Previously captured bridgeheads extremely complicated supply of Nazi troops and already 8-10 June marines was able to gain a foothold on the coast and move inland.
June 29, 1944 fighters of air and sea landings together and took control of the city of Cherbourg, the strategic importance of which is determined by the presence of high-sea port capacity. After transportation of Cherbourg Allied ships were able to transfer to help advancing units additional reinforcements and equipment. July 21, 1944 the Allies liberated the city of St. Lo, 15 August - additional troops landed in northern France on 25 August, crossed the Seine and liberated the French capital - Paris. Really tacky German troops retreated to the east of the Siegfried line, which strengthened by transferring fighting on the western theater of protracted phase.
