Detailed description

Preparations for the liberation of Sevastopol began in the spring of 1944 when, in the course of Melitopol, Novorossiisk-Taman and Kerch-Eltigen operations Sevastopol main grouping of the Wehrmacht was blocked. The general management of the operation was entrusted to Marshal Vasilevsky. Trying to keep the city, the Germans stepped Sevastopol grouping, but the Soviet Union in the direction of the main attack was able to concentrate a similar group of troops.

April 18, Soviet troops took Balaklava, which created conditions for overcoming the German fortified line Belbek - Balaklava. May 7 was deployed on the offensive line Sapun Mountain - elevation mountain. May 9 stormed directly Sevastopol. Marshal Vasilevsky was able to take the city quickly decisive blow, avoiding protracted street fighting, and by the evening most of Sevastopol was under the control of the Soviet troops.

The surviving parts of the Wehrmacht retreated to Cape Chersonese, where they were pressed to the sea. An attempt to evacuate the blocked group was foiled by the forces of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet. May 12, 1944, the Red Army defeated the remnants of the Wehrmacht troops.
