The advanced part of the American and Soviet armies approached the Elbe river at the end of April 1945 From the American side, it was the 69th Infantry Division, 1st US Army, the Soviet - 58th Infantry Division of the 1st Ukrainian Front. The objective compound of the allied forces was the division of the German troops into northern and southern part in order to facilitate their subsequent destruction.

The main task was the correct identification of the allied forces: in command of both armies rightly feared that the advanced part of the allied forces can take over the Germans and attack them. It was agreed - at the approach to the proposed venue Soviet troops served a red signal rocket, the US military - green rocket. April 25, 1945 American patrol under the command of 1st Lieutenant Albert Kotzebue filing the prearranged signal, crossed the Elbe.
