Detailed description
Vienna operation started March 16, 1945, after a massive artillery barrage on the offensive moved troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. However, the Red Army met stiff resistance here good defense in depth of the enemy, in the evening on March 16 managed to advance only 3-7 km. deep into the front line. To help the advancing troops were given a second Soviet tank army, which hastened the onset.
The advanced part of the 3rd Ukrainian Front - 2nd Panzer and 9th Guards Army from the north and 26th and 27th Army from the south began to move in converging directions, intending to lock the major German group in the boiler. Under the threat environment averted Wehrmacht 2nd SS Panzer Army, with at the end of the retreat at the disposal of the Germans was a corridor with a width of about two and a half kilometers. The attempt to encircle the German army, thus, failed, but on March 29 the Soviet 57th Army launched a massive offensive in the strategically important area of the city of Nagykanizsa, which has managed to take on 30 March. The same day, the 5th Guards Cavalry Corps, having made a 70-kilometer march across difficult terrain, went to the rear of the defending German forces, forcing her to retreat immediately.
April 5, 1945, the Red Army from the south came to Vienna. 7 April 9th Guards Army and the 6th Panzer Army Soviet mountain-breaking array Vienna Woods came to the Danube. The German group was blocked from the east, south and west, and April 13, 1945 ceased resistance. Vienna came under the control of the Soviet troops.
