Detailed description

Arctic preceded liberation offensive in southern Karelia (Svir-Petrozavodsk operation). The Soviet air force, ground troops and Marines fought with the Finnish Army. Beginning June 21 marked the onset of bombing enemy positions from the air and ground-based instruments. In the afternoon it began forcing the Svir River. By the end of the day the attackers moved six kilometers into the main Finnish defense zone. Finnish troops began to retreat to Petrozavodsk. The capital of Karelia - Petrozavodsk - released June 28.

In October of the same year the operation to liberate the Arctic (Petsamo-Kirkenes) held in northern Finland and Norway. Despite the Soviet Union's superiority in manpower and equipment, the situation on this front was complicated by difficult conditions - the cliffs, fjords and lakes. Petsamo was released a week after the battle. The Nazis began to retreat to Kirkenes. Continuing the offensive advanced Soviet units on October 18 came to the Norwegian border. During the protracted bitter fighting October 25 Kirkenes was liberated from the invaders.

The result of these two operations was the liberation of most of the Karelian-Finnish Soviet Republic, the northern lands of Finland and Norway. Out of the Finnish war was a foregone conclusion and significantly accelerated.
