Detailed description

The most important page in the history of Murmansk was the Great Patriotic War. The German command believed the capture of the train station and the port through which the military supplies to Russia from its allies, as the most important strategic goals.

Invasion of the German and Finnish troops in the city began in 1941. According to the plans of the enemy, Murmansk had to grab for a few days, but their troops along the border greeted well-trained Russian frontier defense. Severe weather conditions and fierce resistance from the Soviet troops did not allow the Germans to capture the city and take possession of the vital railway line. As a result, three-quarters battles of city buildings were destroyed, but Murmansk port did not stop working for a minute.

Higher degree of difference "Hero City" Order of Lenin and medal "Gold Star" awarded in Murmansk in 1985 for the heroism and courage of its defenders, manifested in the struggle for freedom and independence of their country in World War II.
