Detailed description
Defensive city operation began September 30, 1941, and ended only April 20, 1942. During the defensive period until 5 December 1941, because of the stubborn resistance of the Soviet troops and bloody battles, the offensive Nazi troops was stopped. December 5-6, 1941, realizing that the enemy has exhausted itself, the Soviet troops launched a counteroffensive. For December 8 Hitler signed a decree on early defensive operations along the entire Soviet-German front, including in Moscow.
The Battle of Moscow was the first major defeat of the German army during the Second World War. The outcome of this battle was the psychological turning point for soldiers and civilians: increased confidence in victory, and the myth of the invincibility of the German army was debunked. Plan blitzkrieg was thwarted.
