Sturdy wall stood residents Kursk to defend the small country and all the big countries of the fascist German invaders. The city of destruction battalions were organized, the soldiers who were guarding the enterprise from saboteurs and maintained order in the city. Four regiments of national militia, and more than 400 groups of self-defense against air raids were formed from thousands of volunteers, not caught in the early days under mobilization. Around the city grew fortifications, gun emplacements and barricades settled on the streets.

On August 29, 1941 began the attacks of the enemy aviation and bombing of Kursk. In the night from 2 to 3 November, after fierce battles in the streets, which lasted almost the whole day, the town was handed over to the Germans. Over 15 months, continued the Nazi occupation. The inhabitants died of starvation, the Nazis shot them and drove to Germany, but they continued to fight with the enemy, helping the guerrillas and Soviet prisoners of war.

In February 1943, the city of Voronezh Front troops liberated. But in the summer of that year, the Kursk was again in the thick of the battle. Since the beginning of July until the third decade of August, 50 days lasted Battle of Kursk. Under the Prokhorovka village situated on the Kursk, we met on the field of battle more than 1,000 tanks, went into history as the most major tank battle of the 2nd World War. Operation "Citadel", designed by Hitler's command for the purpose of counter-offensive after the defeat at Stalingrad, suffered a crushing fiasco. German troops had to defend on all fronts.
