Modern Kirov region and it in honor of his native and active politician Sergei Kirov Kirov administrative center got its name December 7, 1934-year. Before renaming the city it was called Vyatka and has a rich history dating back to its origins in antiquity.

The first people on the banks of the Vyatka appeared already in the Paleolithic. And in the 7th century BC. e. the inhabitants of this land already knew how to make iron tools, engaged in cattle breeding, they worked the land, hunted for fur animals. Most of the archaeological finds on the ground vyat date from this time.

In the late 12th century on the land adjacent to the Vyatka, Russian began to migrate. They began to appear Slavic settlement: Orel, Kotelnich, Khlynovsky and others. About town of Vyatka first mentioned in chronicles in 1374, the year. Since that time, Vyatka was part of the first of the Novgorod principality, and then Moscow. It was a frontier area, which has a negative effect on the increase in population and the development of the city.

Gradually, the Muscovite state expanded and Vyatka ceased to occupy the border post, with the passage of time, becoming the central region. In 1796, the year Vyatka province was formed, which, as part of the administrative and lasted until the October Revolution. In 1934, the year the Kirov region was formed, and in 1936 it stood out from the Udmurt autonomy, and the edge of the area began.

The great impetus for the development of the region was the construction of Trans-Siberian railway, geological exploration and development of iron ore deposits, the largest in Europe Vyatsko-Kamsky phosphate deposit.
