Detailed description
In the fall of 1943, the Soviet army withdrew to the Dnieper. Ahead was the right-bank Ukraine, occupied by the Nazis. And the capital of Ukraine, the city of Kiev. Our troops were to liberate Ukraine from the fascist yoke.
The Dnieper is a broad and powerful river, a serious barrier, a beautiful defensive line. Soviet troops used a variety of improvised means for the crossing. The local population helped our soldiers build rafts, gave away their boats, which were hidden from the Germans, the guerrillas seized the ferries and held them until the approach of our soldiers. The soldiers crossed the Dnieper under enemy fire. The Germans bombed all the ferries, conducted continuous artillery and machine-gun fire. Many died in the waters of the Dnieper. Those who managed to cross over, seized bridgeheads on the right bank - a narrow strip of the shore. The bridgeheads were enlarged, strengthened, our troops, who crossed the Dnieper, equipment, ammunition, concentrated on them.
Kiev liberated the troops of the First Ukrainian Front. The Hitlerites understood that they had to be kept at Kiev at any cost, otherwise the entire German southern grouping would be attacked, and the Red Army would open its way to Europe. November 3, 1943, our troops broke through the fascist defense. Tank groupings moved to Kiev. November 5, fighting was on the outskirts of the city. The fighting went on all night, and on November 6, Kiev, the "mother of Russian cities," was released. For two long years people suffered in the occupation, starved, lost loved ones, lost even hope, knowing nothing about the situation on the fronts. Finally, our soldiers returned to drive out the invaders and liberate the city. In honor of this event in Moscow, a festive salute was given. The whole country glorified the heroes - the liberators of Kiev.
