Kerch-Eltigen Operation (31 October - 11 December 1943) - operation of troops of the North Caucasus Front (from November 20, 1943 - Separate Maritime Army), the Black Sea Fleet and the Azov Flotilla conducted in order to release the Kerch Peninsula.
The result of the operation was the capture of a base on the Crimean peninsula.
Kerch-Eltigen Operation was one of the largest amphibious operation of World War II. Although the Soviet forces failed to free the Kerch Peninsula Kerch-Eltigen Operation was an important military and political significance: as a result it had been drawn with the direction of Perekop considerable enemy forces and thwarted his intention to strike back at the advancing troops of the 4th Ukrainian Front.
The captured Kerch bridgehead was used later in the liberation of Crimea.
For military merits in the Kerch-Eltigen Operation Division of the most distinguished, parts and vehicles converted into the Guard and awarded orders; 129 soldiers were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
In memory of a memorable sign "Member Eltigen landing" was released on the operation.
