Detailed description
Kargopol - a small town in the Arkhangelsk region. It is situated in a beautiful region, on the left bank of the Onega river near its source. The name of the city gave the Old Russian "Cargo area", and the first mention of it in the chronicle evidence related to 1146-th year. Like many cities of ancient Russia, Kargopol emerged at the crossroads of several trade routes, developed rapidly. Its inhabitants participated in hostilities against the Teutonic Knights and the Swedes. In Kargopol remains of earthen walls and the ancient prison.
After joining Kargopol with Novgorod to Moscow principality the town received a new administrative status. Lands on the Onega Kargopol county was formed to the White Sea, which is controlled by the Moscow governor. The city was one of the regions which have the right to maintain the guardsmen. Kargopolskaya fortress was one of the most fortified, as evidenced by the fact that during the war with the Poles, the conquerors never managed to capture it. At the end of the 15th century the city became a place of exile.
In 1765, the year Kargopol almost completely burnt out as a result of a terrible fire. At the same time it has been irretrievably lost most extensive town archive. After that fire the city was rebuilt on a new plan, which was released from the center of development, and the streets as much as possible straightened.
After the conquest of Peter I to the Russian Empire in the Baltic Sea output, trade routes shifted from Kargopol to the side, and he eventually became a small county town. Today its original grandeur reminiscent of the many golden domes of the city's churches and temples, cathedrals and monasteries. Almost all of them are federal monuments and listed in the list of objects of cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.
