Kalach-on-Don was in the midst of the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942-1943, which, in fact, turn the tide of World War II. November 23, 1942, as part of Operation "Uranus", in Kalachyovsky District closed the ring around the 6th Army of Wehrmacht. The defenders of the city in fierce battles against the Nazi invaders showed resistance, courage and heroism. According to the archives of the museum Kalachevsky, during the fighting in the area of the city killed more than 50 thousand Soviet soldiers. Kalac also played a major role in the Battle of Stalingrad, its final stage - "Operation Ring" (1943). In Kalachyovsky District closed the ring over the German-fascist invaders. It is here that started and completed the encirclement of enemy forces counter-offensive of the Red Army, which resulted in the "Stalingrad cauldron" were 22 German divisions of Field Marshal Paulus.
South-east of the city (near the village Soviet) was the connection of the South-Western and Stalingrad fronts, completing the encirclement of the German fascist troops at Stalingrad. At this point, it erected a monument to the "Connection of fronts."
