Detailed description
The Irkutsk region is a vast expanse of Transbaikalia, forests and steppes of the East Siberian plateau, stretching for many kilometers, the edge of powerful rivers (first of all, it is the Angara), the everlasting taiga and strong people. Here is the famous Lake Baikal and the Baikal National Park.
Russian pioneers arrived here in the first half of the XVII century, that is, immediately after the end of the Troubles. Pioneers built in the taiga settlements, fenced with palisade - jails, for protection from the beast and dashing people. The first settlement was built in 1628, the city of Irkutsk (at that time called the Irkutsk jail) was built in the second half of the XVII century.
By the beginning of the XVIII century to manage these lands was created by the Siberian province. The province was rich in forests, minerals, furs, and its lands were used by the state for extraction and export of minerals. After the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, the territory acquired a trade-transit value.
During the Soviet period, the authorities tried to transform the region, to change its narrow-raw-material orientation. Large hydroelectric power stations were built, giving cheap electric power, without which no development of industry is possible. Industrial enterprises of the mining cycle, machine-building, chemical and petrochemical, pulp and paper enterprises, and ferrous metallurgy enterprises were established. The Baikal-Amur Railway was added to the Trans-Siberian Railway, one of the largest railroads in the world.
Now the territory is gradually returning to the state of the XIX century, when the main specialization of the region was the export of wood and raw materials.
