Detailed description
Kerch is a city in the eastern Crimea, on the shore of the Kerch Strait, one of the oldest cities in the world.
During the Great Patriotic War in the area of Kerch there were major battles. The city was twice occupied by German fascist troops and almost completely destroyed. The first time Kerch was captured on November 16, 1941, but as early as December 30, 1941, Soviet troops liberated the city during the offensive Kerch-Feodosia landing operation. During the occupation, several thousand civilians were killed, of which 7 thousand were shot in the Bagerovo trench. During the first half of 1942, the troops of the Crimean Front, with the support of the Black Sea Fleet and the Azov Flotilla, fought offensive, but in the course of a new offensive by large enemy forces concentrated on the Kerch Peninsula, in May 1942 the city was again captured by the fascists. From the second half of May to the end of October 1942, part of the troops of the Crimean front, hiding in the Adzhimushkay quarries, fought heroically against the German troops. October 31, 1943, the Kerch-Eltigen landing operation began, during which the paratroopers, during 36 days in unequal combat, repulsed enemy attacks and held the occupied bridgehead. The feat of the landing party participants laid the foundation for the liberation of Kerch and the whole Crimea. On April 11, 1944, the combined forces of the Azov Military Flotilla, the Black Sea Fleet and the Separate Primorsky Army began an active assault on the city and, after persistent battles, liberated it.
September 14, 1973 Kerch was awarded the title Hero City with the delivery of the highest awards of the USSR - the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal.
