Detailed description
Wittgenstein Peter Hristianovich, general and commander of the first corps of infantry, during the battles of 1812 defended the Northern Capital of the French forces, commanded by Marshal Macdonald, and Marshal Oudinot. In the battle Wittgenstein received two wounds, but the task of the defense of St. Petersburg performed. The public recognized his deliverer capital.
In the battle at the river Berezina P. H. Wittgenstein from Kutuzov received the order to connect with Chichagova forces to jointly encircle and destroy Napoleon. However, the general is in no hurry to carry out an order-in-Chief, saying that it is better to risk Chichagov and stop the enemy. As a result Bonaparte escaped captivity and escaped from the environment, crossing the Berezina River.
In 1813 Wittgenstein, after the demise of His Serene Highness Prince Mikhail Kutuzov, the Commander in Chief is appointed, but because of the chain of defeats, which is suffering from the enemy, demoted from the post and shifted. In place of the Chief of the General-Field Marshal Russian troops assigned Barclay de Tolly, who was lucky enough to bring victory to the Patriotic War of 1812
