During the Great Patriotic War, our troops were forced to leave the city of Gatchina (which was then called Krasnogvardeysky) in September 1941. Fascists, taking the city, drove into him the inhabitants of the front line and began to systematically destroy them, as the "new order" demanded. A huge concentration camp was created under the name "Dulag 154". This concentration camp had many branches. Hundreds of people died of hunger and cold every day. In addition, someone was constantly shot on the streets of the city. In order not to help wounded prisoners of war, the fascists drove them on foot from camp to camp until the wounded died on the way. There were concentration camps for the civilian population. The most terrible of them was the peat camp camp. All the prisoners there were branded and forced to produce peat. Prisoners died of hunger, cold and overwork. In winter, a typhus epidemic began in concentration camps. To stop the epidemic, the Germans began to shoot the sick. When the Germans realized that even the epidemic could not be stopped by executions, they burned all the barracks with the sick people who were there. The whole city heard the screams and groans of people burned alive.
The Hitlerites considered Gatchina an important strategic point for an attack on Leningrad. Here was the German intelligence service, the center of propaganda, and the punitive organs were concentrated, which were supposed to lead the "new order" after the seizure of Leningrad. Punishers, in anticipation of a lot of work, while training on the residents of Gatchina. They did not yet know that they would not be able to take Leningrad.
But people did not give up. In the city were created underground, partisan and intelligence groups. The underground workers hung out leaflets with reports of the situation on the fronts, delayed the repair of fascist equipment, extracted weapons, and helped prisoners of war who fled from the camps. The underground workers, who worked as translators at the commandant's office, informed their comrades about secret information.
Gatchina was released in January 1944. Once the blossoming city of the invaders turned into a pile of debris, burned the Great Gatchina Palace, blew up the station buildings, destroyed most of the houses, cut down all the trees in the parks. Out of 50,000 civilians, only about 3,800 remained alive. But the city survived. For showing courage and heroism Gatchina was awarded the honorary title City of Military Glory.
