The first occupation took place in July, forty-first and lasted just over a month. However, after a short time, in October, forty-one of Hitler's army again captured Yelnya. The second seizure lasted two years. People have shown courage and heroism. Civilians and Soviet troops in every way tried to confront the enemy, even in very difficult times.
For this, it was decided to add to the list of Yelnya Cities of Military Glory and assign the title of the same name in 2007.
