In Lipetsk region on the tributaries of the Don Quick Elchika Pines and in ancient times there was a border fortress Elec. It serves for the protection of the Russian state from the raids of the steppe nomads, hunted in the wild pitch. The first written mention of Yelets as the city belongs to the chronicle of the year 1146. This date is considered to be the year of its foundation, but historical data confirm that Elec much older.
