Detailed description

Derbent - Dagestani town, which is probably the oldest settlement in the Russian Federation. The first people came here in the Bronze Age - about 4 thousand years BC. Already in the 6th century BC. e. a town called the Caspian Gates - the ancient name of Derbent (Persian "closed gate") - for the first time mentions the ancient Greek geographer Hecataeus.

The city is situated on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, where it empties into the river Suhodol. At this point, the Caucasian mountains left to the people the narrow three-kilometer run along the coast, the closest approaches to the sea. On this strip of land between the mountains and the sea in the 438th year district. e. Persians built a fortress.
