Detailed description
Battle for Leningrad became the longest running battle of Soviet troops in the fight against the Nazis. The capture of the northern capital would entail huge consequences - the northern parts of the country would have been cut off from the country's access to the Baltic Sea would be lost. Hitler understood this and gave the city taking a huge force. The onset of a combined force of German and Finnish troops began on August 10 41 th year.
In August, fighting took place in the vicinity of Leningrad. August 30 the Germans cut off the city from the railway, and September 8 closed the overland blockade. With the city remained only air and water communication. In the winter directly on the ice of Lake Ladoga paved "road of life", through which the delivery of food and goods, as well as the evacuation of the population and cultural values.
Leningrad resisted, but were killed by shelling and bombing, frozen in the cold and die from lack of food about one million people, not had time to evacuate. The people had no water and heat, light is fed only by the hour. But the company continued to work, producing weapons, repairing and producing tanks, aircraft and warships.
In January '43, the troops of the Soviet Union were able to clear the corridor to Leningrad about 10 kilometers wide. Over 2.5 weeks were able to build the railway, "The road of victory" and to establish road links with the city. A year later, the favorable situation on the front allowed to begin the liberation of Leningrad region. By the end of January, it has been completely removed the blockade, and a month later almost the whole area was liberated. Battle for Leningrad was completed in August 1944. Plans for the Wehrmacht failed, and Finland was forced to completely withdraw from the war.
