Detailed description

By the middle of the third year of the onset of the Soviet Union, Hitler finally realized a failure of its plan for the rapid capture of the Soviet Union. The main objective was to keep the positions captured and buy time for the constriction of additional reserves.

The Soviet command has set a goal to return the southern territories, rich in natural resources and fertile land. 26 August enemy positions from the Azov Sea to Smolensk began the offensive of the Red Army. Departing for the Dnieper, the Germans suffered heavy losses, however, universally applying the tactics of "scorched earth" policy, leaving behind a burned down towns and villages.

21-22 September first combat unit of the USSR came to the banks of the Dnieper. The left bank of the river was fully occupied by Soviet troops by the end of the month. In order not to give the enemy time to fill incurred losses during the retreat, it was decided to immediately crossed the Dnieper. Soviet war in the wake of raising patriotic sentiments crossed the river in all possible ways, using the construction of rafts tree trunks, old barrels and planks. The Germans brought down to smuggle powerful forces fire artillery rounds, bombed with aircraft positions. fighters losses amounted to about 20-30% of staff. The culmination of the battle for the Dnieper can be considered the liberation of Kiev and complete cleaning of territories of Donbass from fascists. The rapid pace of industrial recovery began.
