Detailed description

The Berlin strategic operation is an offensive operation of the Soviet troops, as a result of which the capital of Hitler's Germany, Berlin, was taken on May 2, 1945, the largest group of fascist troops was destroyed, and German military and political leaders were taken prisoner. With the fall of Berlin, the control of the troops was lost and the organized resistance of the German troops was stopped. An act was signed on the unconditional surrender of Hitlerite Germany. This operation is the largest battle of the Second World War. About 3, 5 million people from both sides took part in it. The operation lasted from April 16 to May 8, 1945.

In March 1945, our troops reached the line of the Oder and Neisse, and the Anglo-American allies - to the Elbe. Hitler by this time lost important raw areas, the supply of the German army with technical resources worsened, but the German armed forces were still strong. The leadership of fascist Germany tried to delay the hostilities in order to have time to conclude a separate peace with Britain and the United States of America. He needed to keep the eastern front at all costs. Therefore, the main lines of defense were built between the Oder and Berlin, the defense was deeply echeloned, powerful reserves were created, the divisions of the eastern front were replenished with equipment and people. The Soviet Union needed to disrupt the enemy's plans in the shortest possible time, to seize Berlin and go to the Elbe, to meet with the allies.

Carefully prepared for the operation. A detailed aerial survey of Berlin and the defensive lines was carried out, according to the results, accurate maps and a mock-up of Berlin with suburbs were drawn up, maps were supplied to all units. The reconnaissance was carried out, the location of the enemy's weapons was determined, the location of its enemy units was determined, 25 automobile bridges were constructed across the Oder River, ferry crossings, rafts and pontoons were prepared, the gatchies were laid over the swamps, all the railway linen in the occupied territory was converted to the Russian track width, that the provision of military units with ammunition and fuel was uninterrupted.

The operation began at night. Suddenly, powerful anti-aircraft spotlights were lit, they illuminated the road to our troops and blinded the enemy, disabling night vision devices. The Germans fiercely resisted, knowing that the retreating will be shot. But our army was stronger. On April 18, Seelow heights were taken, enemy defense was broken, on April 25, Berlin was surrounded. After a week of city fighting, on May 2, 1945, the Berlin garrison stopped resistance. On May 8, the Act of unconditional surrender of Germany was signed. Germany lost the war, but got the opportunity to start a new life free from Nazism, to build a new state.

In memory of the Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of Berlin, in the capital of Germany, near the military graves, 3 monuments were erected. The most famous among them is a monument to the liberator's warrior in Treptow Park (sculptor Vuchetich, 1949). This monument is a symbol of the liberation of the peoples of Europe from fascism. The prototype of the liberation warrior was Soviet soldier Nikolai Masalov, who brought the German child out of the shelling. In memory of him in Berlin, a memorial plaque with the inscription: "During the battles for Berlin on April 30, 1945 near this bridge, risking his life, he rescued from the fire caught between two fronts of the child."
