Detailed description
Belgorod was in a state of war from the very first days after the attack invaders. The city enterprises were transferred to work around the clock. 299 Infantry Division, more than 5 thousand residents have joined forces in the people's militia was formed from Belgorod. Fighter battalion of 250 people, carried out the work for the protection of Belgorod by saboteurs and paratroopers.
Belgorod earth twice suffered occupation of Hitler's henchmen. The first time the Germans entered the city October 24, 1941, after a two-day battle near the village of Strelets. The invaders tried to destroy any attempt to resist, killing and intimidating the local population. About 2 thousand Belgorod were brutally killed February 6, 1942 near the reed plant, several thousand were shot in the city park. Despite the mass terror in the city and the entire region during the occupation were active partisans and underground fighters, not giving the enemy a quiet life.
In early 1943, soldiers of the Red Army was able to throw the fascists out of Belgorod. The enemy lost thousands of soldiers, several trains and about a dozen warehouses with food and ammunition. But in March, the Germans were able to regain control of the city. The second wave of the occupation lasted for almost 5 months. The city's population at the time of release was only 150 people. All the houses, industrial and socio-cultural buildings were burned or destroyed.
The final liberation of Belgorod happened in early August 43rd, during the Kursk battle during the counter-offensive of the Voronezh Front.
Belgorod has appeared in the list of the first cities in Russia, which in 2007 awarded the title of Cities of Military Glory.
